The Clit Comedy Club @ Tallinn Fringe

The Clit Comedy Club announces itself as an unapologetically feminist show designed to combat the myth that women aren’t funny. Stand-up comedy is still dominated by men, the host Mari Volar tells us at the beginning, with just 15% being women, although they tell 95% of the good jokes. And so it begins.

The line-up at Heldeke! on Thursday night was very international, featuring Mari Volar from Estonia, Lu Noboa from Ecuador, Erin Crouch from the US, Anshita Koul from India and Kaisa Pylkkanen from Finland.

The women were confident in their femininity while standing in the spotlight, whether that meant a cocktail dress covered in sequins, black casual or a skimpy summer outfit to beat the heat.

And although the show is unapologetically feminist, each woman has a different angle, ranging from happy singledom committed to childlessness to newlywed bliss and the toxic joys of caring for small children. They were brave enough to make themselves vulnerable on stage, talking about fear and lack of confidence. At the same time, they didn’t shy away from sharing outrageous and hilarious asides, from fucking a stranger to true love on Tinder.

The audience was regularly invited to join in; even the sound engineer (also a woman) was pulled into the show.

If you are going to start from the premise of proving that women are funny, every comedienne has to be at the top of her game. The five stars of the Clit Comedy Club pulled it off. There were no weak links and never a dull moment.

The show was a blast of fresh air, proving how funny women can be without resorting to shock comedy and insults. If you haven’t seen an all-women show before (and how often does such an opportunity arise?) then you owe it to yourself to catch the Clit Comedy Club this weekend.

And while I’m making recommendations, let me tell you, Plaadimeri, a Baltic Tomato Gose from Purtse, is exactly the right drink for enjoying salty women trying to make you laugh.

This was a great first night for the festival. Check out the Tallinn Fringe site for more details and the program of comedy, art and music sweeping over Tallinn for the next month.
